Ok, so eBay are going to change the rules when it comes to selling digital items…what can you do about it?
Well firstly I’ll explain what a digital item is and how we have been able to sell them on eBay to date.
A digital item is basically anything that can be sent online as an attachment or downloaded from a web page. The usual format is either a PDF file for e-books or an MP3 file for audio books or recordings. We’ve been selling digital e-books on eBay as a lead generator for other higher priced products and to build up our client database.
The way we’ve been selling the e-books is using the “Buy It Now” format and also as a new Classified Ad. Our results from this of course vary and the strategy has not been for us to sell heaps of them, but rather to gain further brand awareness in the market place.
From March the 31st you will no longer be able to sell digital items on eBay in the standard auction format. Instead you will have to list your digital items as a Classified Ad and it must go under the eBay selling category of…Everything Else > Information Products > etc.
So how do we get around this and turn the new policy into a positive? I’m glad you asked
When it comes to selling information online it’s been customary for people to want to sell the digital items and make a profit for pretty much no product cost. But for the savvy information seller, you can actually make more money by selling physical products. For example you can sell a 90 page e-book for lets say $67. If you have the e-book printed, package it in a manual and maybe include a CD with the audio of the e-book, you could possibly sell the product for around $197 or $297.
All this is dependant on the information contained in the new ‘manual’ and the target market you are trying to sell into. Over the next week we will be changing our digital offer in eBay and transfer the e-book onto a CD which we will package up with a few other bonuses. The eBay ID we use to sell information is biddingbuzz and you’ll be able to see what we are doing there and the coming changes we will be making.
When ever the rules are changed ask yourself how can you turn that into a positive and how can you adapt what you do to suit the new policy rules? Being successful in business is all about being fluid and being able to adapt to the ever changing landscape. Because one thing is for certain and that is that change is always going to happen. Whether we like it or not.
Learn to be fluid, think outside the square and focus on asking yourself…”How can I?
Have a great eBay week.
